Enhancing Comfort During Alzheimers

This is my Senior Capstone project. Throughout this project I chose to focus on creating a solution to ease Alzheimer's Disease. I have seen the hardships that come along with the disease as both of my grandparents are diagnosed. This project was driven with passion! I highlight different research techniques and design strategies that helped me find an effective solution to my problem statement and user needs.

01 | Background Research + Problem Scope

To begin my project I conducted extensive background research on Alzheimers. To properly assess and analyze all the factors that surround the disease I conducted a Problem Tree Analysis. After my initial research I identified the key variables of the problem domain. With the key variables distinguished I conducted research to discover key human factors concerns and core issue trends.

02 | User Interviews + Analysis

To further my knowledge and gain insights on Alzheimer's disease and people involved I conducted people (user) research. I scheduled and prepared for 6 interviews with individuals that have caregiving experience or some type of relation to Alzheimer disease. Throughout the interview process I was able to conduct market research to analyze other services and products. After collecting data from user research and market research I was able to implement different techniques to properly analyze my findings. Once I identified the main variables, needs and concerns I re-framed my problem statement.

03 | Final Concept

My final concept is a duo sensor system and mobile app. The vibration sensor uses Accelerometer technology to detect whether an item has been picked up or moved. This sensor can be attached to doors, drawers, bathroom supplies, medication and more. This allows the caregiver and Alzheimer's patient to be as involved as they would like. They are able to place each sensor on items that customize their needs.

The sensor is connected to a mobile app that receives immediate updates if the sensor has been moved/detected. There are immediate alerts and notifications that the user receives. If the caregiver is connected to the app, then they will have comfort in the person with AD daily routines, ultimately supporting peace of mind and safety. If the person with Alzheimers wants to monitor their activity throughout the day then they can have reassurance they completed certain tasks. This will also support them not repeating tasks and staying on the agenda.
